Finding Faith in the Unknown

In the biblical narrative of Exodus, God promises the Israelites provision through manna, a mysterious heavenly bread. This manna, whose name means “What is it?”, represents both God’s promise and the mystery inherent in divine mercy. As we reflect on this story, we can uncover two profound truths: God’s mercy is promised, and it often surprises us in unexpected ways.

God’s Promised Mercy

The Lord assured the Israelites, “You will have plenty of bread.” (Exodus 16:12). This promise highlights God’s commitment to provide for His people, even when circumstances appear dire. The daily gathering of manna was not just a physical necessity but a spiritual exercise in trust and reliance on God’s provision. It served as a daily reminder of His unwavering promise to care for His people, even in the most challenging times.

The Surprise of Divine Mercy

The Israelites’ reaction to manna was one of wonder and confusion: “They did not know what it was.” (Exodus 16:15). This sentiment captures the essence of our spiritual journeys. In times of uncertainty, we too find ourselves asking “What is it?” as we wait for God’s guidance and provision. The unknown can be daunting, yet it is often where we find the most profound expressions of divine mercy.

Nightbirde’s Story: Mercy in the Unknown

Jane “Nightbirde” Marczewski’s life and testimony resonate deeply with the themes of mercy and mystery. Diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2017, Nightbirde faced seemingly insurmountable odds. Despite a brief remission, her cancer returned, yet she defied expectations and was declared cancer-free before her passing on February 19, 2022.

A. Her Testimony: A Manna Mindset

Nightbirde drew parallels between her experience and the Israelites’ journey. She wrote, “I remember praying to the God who let the Israelites wander for years. Every morning, He sent them mercy-bread from heaven. I look for that mercy-bread.” Her steadfast faith during her battle with cancer exemplifies a “manna mindset”—embracing the unknown and trusting in God’s daily provision. Her performance on “America’s Got Talent” was a testament to her unwavering faith and reliance on God’s grace, even as her body weakened.

B. What We Can Learn

Nightbirde’s story teaches us to hold onto the promise of divine provision in both healing and sickness. We can find peace amidst despair and strength in our weakness. Like Nightbirde, we can declare that each breath is manna, each smile a gift, and every prayer heard. Her legacy encourages us to remain open to the unexpected ways in which God’s mercy manifests in our lives.

In our faith journeys, like the Israelites and Nightbirde, we are invited to trust in God’s provision and find comfort in His promises, even when we are unsure of what the future holds. This trust can transform our lives, turning moments of uncertainty into opportunities for profound faith and understanding.
