“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is more than just the title of a beloved hymn; it encapsulates the profound and comforting relationship we have with our Savior. This divine friendship serves as an anchor during life’s storms and a source of upliftment during times of joy.
A Story of Sorrow and Hope
Consider the life of Joseph Scriven, the author of this hymn, who penned its words in 1855. Scriven’s life was marked by deep sorrow and loss. Imagine the heartache of losing his fiancée just before their wedding day. Later, after moving to Canada, he fell in love again, only to endure the pain of watching another beloved pass away.

Despite these devastating losses, Scriven found solace and strength in his relationship with Jesus. Rather than succumbing to despair, he turned to prayer, seeking comfort from the One who promises never to leave us. This divine friendship transformed his grief into hope, and the hymn became a testament to the power of divine friendship.
Finding Peace Through Prayer
Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us: “Do not worry. Pray about everything. Tell God your needs.” We are also reminded to give thanks, as this brings peace beyond our understanding, guarding our hearts and minds in Christ.
We have a Friend who listens, comforts, and brings peace to our chaotic lives. We are encouraged to bring our burdens to Him and embrace His friendship. By sharing our hearts in prayer, we find a loving guide who listens and loves us completely.
Sharing the Message of Hope
In times of loneliness or worry, remember that we are never alone. We can cast our worries on Jesus, knowing He cares deeply for us. By carrying Joseph Scriven’s message, we can find strength in Jesus and share His love and comfort with others. Let us tell those around us that they too can find solace and companionship in our Savior. Amen.
