CONNECTION IS WHY WE’RE HERE.

The world does not need more individuals who are successful in the conventional sense. What the world truly needs are individuals who are dedicated to promoting peace, healing, restoration, storytelling, and love in all its forms, as stated by the Dalai Lama.

Throughout our lives, we have all experienced devastation, loneliness, and overwhelming challenges. When we come across others, it is important to acknowledge and understand their experiences. We should offer support and empathy because our similarities outweigh our differences. It is crucial for us to allow our communities to express love, support, and collaborate with one another. We should reintroduce a sense of neighborliness not only in urban areas but also in suburban regions, gated communities, commercial districts, and prestigious university campuses like Ivy League schools.

The importance of connection and community is emphasized by Grace Lee Boggs. During difficult times like the present, when we are surrounded by challenges, it becomes crucial for us to seek solace and support from one another. We must remember that we are not isolated; our souls are connected, forming a part of the fabric of humanity.

Gary Zukav shares a heartbreaking story in ‘Soul to Soul’ where people stranded in the freezing cold found comfort and camaraderie by huddling together. Despite their limited fuel reserves, they found solace in togetherness and survived collectively until help arrived. This serves as a powerful testament to the fact that empathy unites us more strongly than apathy separates us. I encourage you to lend a helping hand to those who have lost their way and offer comforting words to exhausted souls who need to be reminded that they are not alone. Through empathy, help them rediscover the inner light that has been overshadowed by hardship. Even a smile or a listening ear can lift someone out of despair. By planting these small seeds of hope, you also nurture the love in your own heart.

Emperor Penguins are the only creatures that inhabit Antarctica year-round. These penguins survive the harsh winter cold by huddling closely together and taking turns battling the freezing temperatures. The temperatures often drop to -100 degrees Celsius, and wind speeds can reach up to 124 kilometers per hour. The Emperor Penguins have developed various adaptations to thrive in such extreme and hostile conditions, both physically and behaviorally. While you may not risk your life for a group project, it is important to remember that qualities like resilience, flexibility, and courage are crucial for success in any situation. Every year, for approximately nine months, the emperor penguin endures extreme hardship with the sole goal of successfully hatching an egg.

The emperor penguin begins its journey by swiftly swimming in the water before launching itself out like a torpedo to land on the ice. Then, a long line of emperor penguins embarks on a journey of over one hundred kilometers across the ice, moving together and maintaining silence. They move slowly as penguins are not skilled walkers on land. When they reach their breeding ground, they mate, and the male takes on the responsibility of safeguarding the egg by carrying it in a pouch over his feet. This requires enduring months of blizzards and extremely low temperatures while balancing the egg on his feet to provide warmth and prevent it from touching the icy surface until it hatches. These colonies gather together in a close formation for warmth.

According to reports, Emperor penguins in Antarctica gather in tightly packed circles to stay warm and thrive in harsh conditions. The fittest and healthiest adults occupy the outer part of the circle, experiencing the brunt of freezing temperatures and strong winds. The youngest penguins, who struggle with regulating their body heat, stay in the warm center of the huddle. Adult penguins on the outer edges periodically join the center to warm up, while other strong adults take their place in the chilly outer circle. This ensures that the entire group maintains its body heat without sacrificing the young or elderly and allows the prime individuals to warm themselves in the center. The group’s motto could perhaps be summarized as “Move cold penguins to the center!”

Humans are perhaps similar to the penguins in Antarctica in their desperate efforts to find safety and comfort amidst crises and moments of sadness. There are times when we feel frozen and long for warmth and companionship from those around us. However, there are also moments when we can provide warmth and protection to others. We can learn a valuable lesson from Emperor penguins. Even though we don’t experience such extreme weather, there is ample evidence suggesting that individuals with strong social connections have lower mortality rates. Therefore, just like penguins, it is crucial for us to stay united in the face of life’s most challenging situations. Social connections not only increase life expectancy but also provide a sense of belonging, enhanced self-esteem, and a feeling of security.

Therefore, I believe that penguins are onto something meaningful, as we humans also need each other. As you embark on this journey of connection, I want to emphasize that connection involves a sense of unity. It entails shared experiences, relatable emotions, or similar thoughts. It encompasses the feeling of belonging to something greater than oneself. Connection is about others, not just ourselves. It involves actively listening, going beneath the surface, and genuinely making an effort to understand someone else’s perspective. Connection cannot be established if we are always preoccupied with our phones or allow our minds to wander. It cannot be established if we are always waiting for our turn to speak or eager to share our own version of a story being told by someone else. Even sitting silently together requires being fully present to foster connection. Watching a sporting event with friends, gathering with family for dinner, expressing genuine emotions to another person, or finding common ground with someone all contribute to experiencing connection.

What if we wholeheartedly embraced everyone without intending to pass judgment? Imagine if we could simply love them without feeling like we were endorsing their wrongdoing. Try to establish connections with individuals who have a positive outlook and can bring joy and support into your life. The more positive your relationships are, the better equipped you will be to face life’s obstacles. Although it may be daunting to expose yourself to criticism or judgment, finding a group of people with similar interests is a surefire way to nurture your inner self. Approach upcoming challenges with courage, intelligence, and resilience. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, see them as significant milestones on the path to progress, as beautifully expressed by Maya Angelou.

Remember, you have more than enough abilities just the way you are – your inner light continues to shine. Let it guide and comfort others, leading them away from darkness and into your reassuring presence. We have the power to create a society where everyone experiences the warmth of compassion, one person at a time. Do not underestimate the strength of love that comes from within yourself. Keep shining brightly, unwavering like the guiding star in the north. When challenges arise, come together and offer comfort to one another. Difficult times will eventually pass, but our connection will endure. Dear friend, know that you have my unwavering support. I will stand by your side, guiding you through this challenging period until we witness the dawn of a new day. And when that time comes, we will emerge united, strengthened, and enriched by profound affection and gratitude for the experiences we have encountered along the way.
